My gymnastics journey started when I was three. I was always climbing on everything and doing flips off my grandma, but growing up, I only wanted to stick with gymnastics if my friends were doing them too. That changed around eight years old, when a coach noticed me at a birthday party and asked to speak with my parents about trying out for competitive gymnastics. Once I joined a team, I found the camaraderie I had been looking for and completely fell in love with the sport. I loved (still love) the rush of learning a new skill and the feeling of finally getting something I had worked so hard for.
Even as a gymnast, I was always trying to learn more. I would go to the park on my own, watch YouTube videos, and practice skills over and over until I got them. As I got older, that love for learning naturally turned into a love for coaching. Now, one of my favorite parts of coaching is figuring out what helps each gymnast finally understand a skill and watching that same excitement I felt growing up click for them. I even still practice gymnastics myself because I never want to forget what it feels like to be the gymnast learning the skill, not just the coach teaching it.
Zuzu comes from my middle name, Arezou, which means “wish” in Farsi. I’ve always wished to build something of my own that brought together gymnastics and working with kids. After years of coaching, I started to notice how much of a difference individual attention can make, especially when every gymnast learns and builds confidence differently. I wanted to create the experience I wish I would have had growing up, one that felt more personal, encouraging, and centered around each gymnast. Zuzu is my way of turning something I’ve loved since I was little into something of my own that I can continue to grow and share with other gymnasts.
